In a study of 3,000 sexually active women, PRO 2000 vaginal gel has been shown to protect women from getting HIV during sex. There were 36 HIV infections among women using PRO 2000. This compared to 54 women who used carbomer 974, 51 who used a placebo, and 53 who used nothing. [1]
PRO 2000 (0.5% dose) is developed by Indevus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and BufferGel is developed by ReProtect Inc. In earlier laboratory and animal testing, PRO 2000 demonstrated a protective effect against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections by inhibiting cellular entry. BufferGel was known to boost the natural acidity of the vagina in the presence of seminal fluid, which can help to inactivate HIV and other pathogens.
